I cut my real estate teeth in Detroit, Michigan where I was born and raised. In 1996, my wife and I left our careers and jumped into real estate at the same time full speed. As a team of two, we built a wonderful business through the “bloody-nose” theory of Real Estate. We made just about every mistake we could trying to create the empire we dreamed of. I learned quickly that I enjoyed the management and investment side of things more than the “dealing with the public” side of things. I dove into training and overseeing agents and buying investment properties while managing my wife’s retail real estate business. We did massive and awfully expensive image marketing and found out that it is extremely easy to make a $1,000,000 in real estate if you spend $900,000 in advertising. Thankfully, because we had such high overhead, we felt the crash coming before it hit. We decided that we needed to leave Detroit, or we would quickly lose everything. We did a ton of research and ultimately chose Wichita, KS even though we did not know anyone in the area and were not really even sure which way North was when we got there.
On the 16 hour drive to Wichita, we rewrote our entire business plan. I knew what I wanted and my wife knew what she wanted and neither of us wanted to repeat the mistakes we had made that put us in the position we were in. I ran the back end of my wife’s business and she was the face to the public. In a little more than 3 years, we were in the top 1% of our market. I bought into a small fledgling 8 year old brokerage that had 1 small office and 7 moderate to poor producing agents working primarily new construction. I began coaching my partner about the steps we needed to take to create a company that would be a force in the area and that agents would be proud to work for. In less than 11 years, our company had 3 locations, over 80 agents and we were number 4 in our market area. We had amazing agent retention: in 09 years, the only agents who left were the ones who wanted to start their own Brokerage or were asked to leave.
In March 2020, I sold my interest in the Brokerage and became the Manager for my wife’s growing team. I am excited for our future as I watch our team grow and improve, even in difficult times.

I owned a Brokerage for more than 11 years; growing it with my business partner from one small office with less than 10 agents and no staff; to 80 agents with several full-time staff members. Not only do I know the steps it takes to build an incredible Brokerage from the ground up, but I also understand the ins and outs of agent recruiting, retention and handling the day-to-day tasks that come with building and running a Brokerage. Part of my daily tasks included teaching new agents how to grow their business using fundamental systems and foundational expertise and helping experienced agents identify the issues and revitalize their floundering real estate business.

My perfect Club Wealth client would be the person who wants to build a brokerage while maintaining and building their personal business or someone who currently owns a Brokerage that is struggling to find its feet. The thing that amazes me is that there is very little coaching out there for Brokers to start and build their business. There is so much more to it than a Broker’s license and the idea that you can save money if you hang your own shingle. My perfect client would allow me to guide them away from making the errors that I made so that they may find success early and without the costly mistakes.
